RINGMER FOOTBALL CLUB LTD Ringmer U18s 1 - 7 Haywards Heath Town U18s 11/09/07 Report by Rob Hawkes
The trouble with “preliminary rounds” is they tend to come early in the season. Tonight it seemed it was too early for the Ringmer U18s. Meeting strong opposition will highlight weaknesses in any squad, especially one that is newly formed and still learning to play together. Haywards Heath were a well organised side with a lot of pace up front and they ruthlessly punished individual defensive errors with some clinical finishing.
For the first quarter of an hour it looked as though Ringmer would take easy control of the game, but in the 16th minute, an attack from Haywards Heath’s right side resulted in a low shot across the Ringmer goal with the ball bouncing in off the inside of the far post. This seemed to give the visitors a belief that they would get something from this game and they then pressed forward at every opportunity. With the visitors scoring a further three goals in the 24th, 26th and 44th minutes the first half concluded 0 – 4.
Ringmer started the second half with two substitutions and a renewed enthusiasm and a determination to turn things around, but again individual errors allowed HH in to score a further three goals.
In the 67th minute the ball eventually found its way through to Ryan Betsworth who spun and firing the ball into the top of the net claimed a well earned consolation goal.
