Fully Insured RINGMER 1ST X1 2 – 0 SELSEY 1ST X1 DIVISION ONE 21/03/09 Match Report by David Ruffles
With both sides going through a lean spell in front of goal a low-scoring game was always the mostly likely scenario. With a number of players unavailable for a variety of reasons Ringmer were forced to play Ryan MacMillan as an emergence striker. The Blues also gave a debut to Ringmer boy Jon Marzetti their mid-week signing from Northampton Town.
Ringmer had the lion’s share of the play in first thirty minutes with Will Broomfield prominent in their best attacking moves. In the seventh minute a thirty yard strike from Joe Dryer was tipped over the crossbar by Steve Phillips in the Selsey goal. Four minutes later Joe Adams had to be at full stretch to deflect a low shot from Ross Woolf wide. Then on twenty six minutes quick thinking by Broomfield and Dryer put Simon Greatwich clear to slide the ball past Phillips from near the penalty spot.
By now the game was becoming increasingly scrappy as the referee’s whistle frequently halted the play to award free kicks for a growing number of fouls. Although Selsey began to come more into the game they failed to trouble Adams again during the remainder of the half.
Ten minutes into the second half Ringmer could have doubled their lead. A cross from Broomfield found Greatwich but somehow the keeper managed to block his shot and although Mark Price got his head to the rebound he could only direct his header over the bar. Then in a copycat move, Greatwich’s cross found Kieran Patel at the far post and again his shot was blocked by Phillips.
Midway through the half Adams did well to block a shot from Woolf as the Selsey striker cut in from the right flank. Then five minutes from time Patel cut the ball back from the bye-line for Marzetti to celebrate his debut with a chip over the keeper which secured all three points for his home club.
