1ST XI 1 – 2 RINGMER 1ST XI DIVISION
ONE 13/04/09 Match
Report by David Ruffles On
Easter Monday a sparse crowd enjoyed an enthralling encounter which
saw Ringmer climb two places to eleventh in the table at the expense
of their hosts. For
most of the first half the Blues laid siege to the Hawks goal but
stout defending allied with poor finishing meant Ross Standen, one
of six Ringmer players in the home squad, did not have a single save
to make in the half. Things could have been so different as Ringmer
had two good shouts for a penalty but on both occasions the
officials thought otherwise. On rare occasions when the Hawks
advanced the Blues defence saw to it that Joe Adams had little to
deal with. The
second half was more evenly balanced with Whitehawk finally putting
the Blues defence under some pressure. The first goal arrived after
almost an hour’s play when Josh Jones beat Joe Dryer to a
loose ball in midfield and his low cross from near the by-line
deflected off Jayson Sowter and out of reach of Adams to put the
home side in front. After being in command from the start Ringmer
were initially deflated by conceding such a soft goal but as the
Hawks pressed forward for a second goal the Blues gradually regained
their composure and were rewarded by two goals in a five minutes
spell some twenty minutes from time. First a shot from thirty yards
by David Altendorf was spilled by Standen low down by his left hand
post and Jo Jo Tubon was on hand to tap in the equalising goal.
Minutes later a centrally placed free-kick from some twenty-five
yards out taken by Kieran Patel left Standen standing as it flew
into the net. Both sides had chances to score in the remaining
fifteen minutes but in the end Ringmer ran out worthy winners.
