LITTLE COMMON FC 1 - 2 RINGMER FC John O’Hara League Cup 24/10/09 Report by David Ruffles
On an uneven playing surface and in steady rain both sides struggled to stay upright in very slippery conditions in this John O’Hara League Cup game. Little Common favoured the long ball aimed at their twin strike force of Lewis Hole and Dean Allen while Ringmer preferred to play the ball on the deck and attack down both flanks.
After a quarter of an hour Gary Trott used his feet to keep out a strike from Allen and Hole, following up that shot, was unlucky to see his shot rebound to safety off the goal post. This wake up call for Ringmer was soon followed by a purple patch for the Blues during which Jo Jo Tubon scored twice inside three minutes. First a corner taken by Jon Marzetti was missed by Richie Gray in the home goal and although Ryan MacMillan could not react quickly enough when the ball fell at his feet the ball ran kindly for Tubon to shoot through a ruck of players to open the scoring. His second was a low shot into the far corner of the net following a cross from Jayson Sowter. A minute later Kieran Patel should have made it three only to lift his shot over the bar when it seemed far easier to score.
With the pitch slowly drying out there were less excuses for some wayward passing in the second half. The home side pressed forward in an attempt to claw their way into the match and Adam Fisher came close to pulling a goal back ten minutes into the half with a far post header that was just wide of the target. At the other end Patel missed two chances to put the result beyond doubt. However, the Blues goal led a charmed life midway through the half with two shots cleared off the goal-line and Trott called upon to make a number of saves. In the end Little Common gained their reward with a late goal from Hole to herald a tense final ten minutes before the Blues could turn their thoughts to a home tie against Wick in the Third Round.
