CRAWLEY DOWN 1st X1 0 – 2 RINGMER 1st X1 DIVISION ONE 06/02/10 Report by the Crouchies
Ringmer were eager to get back to the league games and set about getting a few more points to get them off the bottom of the table. This was accomplished set and match at Crawley Down this weekend. A bit of a change in the starting line up as a few players were unavailable and with Kieran Patel resting. Jayson Sowter was moved up to take Patel's no 7 shirt and Aaron Philips joining Dave Soutar and Glen Matten at the back.
The Blues started well and were soon on the hunt for their first goal, Mark Price testing the waters down the right with a ball played to him by Jayson Sowter, Price beat the defence to get a cross over but it was knocked out for a corner. After nine minutes Crawley Down had there first test of the Ringmer side's defence and managed to get a shot in that Blues keeper Tom Rand saved comfortably. On the return David Altendorff crossed to Sowter but his shot deflected out for another corner.
On thirteen minutes Ringmer got there first goal a ball in from the right skipped across the Crawley Down goal area, Price's shot from a few yards was blocked but it fell nicely for Sowter who blasted it in the net. 0-1.
The Anvils then inject a period of pressure to pull the game back to equal terms, however, Ringmers defence and midfield seem to be on form and the home side find chances at goal to be very slim with the odd shot going wide or high, The best chance came after twenty five minutes when Captain Tony Reid found himself on his own with the ball 8 yards out on the left which had skipped across the Ringmer box from the right after a blocked shot, but his shot went harmlessly wide of the empty net.
A long ball up the field from the home side saw Rand rush out of his goal and the box to send the ball back down to an awaiting Jo Jo Tubon on the left, Tubon gathered and controlled the ball then beating his defenders, shot in from twenty yards past Shayne Goldsmith in the home goal , claiming number two for the Blues, 0-2.
Play went back and fourth for the rest of the half, Joe Dryer coming close with a free kick the ball bouncing off the bar but the half ended without any other incident with Ringmer leading 0-2.
The second half started with the Anvils determined to make amends for the first half and put Ringmer under pressure straight away, the Blues defence working hard to repel all attempts. But as it was, David Altendorff had the first real chance for the Blues after he met a Joe Dryer free kick to head in to keeper Goldsmiths arms. Another chance this time Tubon comes in with a flying header but contact was light and it goes just wide.
Crawley Down come back time and time again with waves of attack but find no way in, the Ringmer defence soaking up and dealing with most attempts, Crawley seeing their odd chance go wide, high or being safely gathered by Rand. A short free kick out on the left was shot in but wide, and ex Blues player Matt Beeston saw his shot sail over the Ringmer bar.
Ringmer were making good efforts at improving their goal tally though and were creating some good play up front Dryer, Altendorff, Sowter and Tubon working well together. Dryer passing to Altendorff who then passes to Sowter whose shot was deflected just went wide of goal for a corner. On another attack Dryer crossed to Sowter who in turn pushes the ball to Tubon but the shot was saved by Goldsmith.
With fifteen minutes to go Crawley continue the pressure still looking for a gap in the Ringmer defence. But the Blues were resolute in the fact they would keep a clean sheet and continued to deal with the onslaught, Aaron Hasan, Glen Matten, Dave Soutar, Aaron Philips and Jon Marzetti all doing their bit with great organizing from Rand in goal.
Ringmer nearly had a third in the 81st minute after Tubon rounded the onrushing keeper and passed across to Altendorff who with no clear shot passed to Soutar who then passed to Ben Bowra (on for an injured Price) coming in from the right, Bowra's shot going just wide. Both sides battled well to the end whistle and played a very entertaining game of football.
