RINGMER FC 2 – 3 CROWBOROUGH ATHLETIC FC FA VASE 1ST ROUND PROPER 03 October 2009 Report by David Ruffles
Ringmer bowed out of the FA Vase with a disappointing home defeat by fellow League basement club Crowborough Athletic.
There was little to choose between the sides in a first half which saw few real chances and yet finished with the sides sharing four goals from the only shots on target. After thirteen minutes a cross from Kieran Patel on the left flank found Jo Jo Tubon with his back to goal inside the Crows penalty area but the Blues striker still managed to give the home side the lead with an overhead kick out of reach of Rob Gordon in goal for the Crows. Twelve minutes later the scores were level when a long range effort from Luke Leppard found the top corner of the Ringmer goal. Six minutes after and the visitors were ahead as a long ball out of the Crows defence saw Scott Treleaven run unchallenged into the Blues penalty area before lifting the ball over the advancing Sean McFadden. Then, seven minutes before half time, a cross from Jayson Sowter, after a storming run down the right flank, was played back across the goalmouth by Darren Lok for David Altendorf to equalise.
The second half saw Ringmer dominate possession with both Mat Percival and Lok close to giving the Blues the lead inside the first ten minutes of the half. However, the best chance of the half came at the opposite end of the park where Ross Campbell unmarked at the far post could only deflect a cross from Nathan Millroy high and wide of the target when a goal seemed certain. However Ringmer’s reprieve was short-lived as three minutes later when Chris Ransome bundled the ball into the net for the scrappiest goal of the game after the Ringmer defence failed to deal adequately with a corner. Moments later it took an excellent flying save from Gordon to deny Patel an equaliser and although Ringmer continued to drive forward the last chance of the game saw a shot from Treleaven go inches over the Blues crossbar.
So Ringmer are now free to concentrate on the League while Crowborough’s dream of Wembley lives on.
