EASTBOURNE UA 1st X1 2 – 2 RINGMER 1ST X1 DIVISION ONE 08/12/09 Report by Ben Ashcroft
Ringmer travelled to high-flying Eastbourne United on Tuesday evening hoping to continue where they left off on Friday night. With conditions inevitably tricky and on Eastbourne’s ever impressive pitch the game ended two apiece. Goals from Hasan and Altendorf were flanked by a home side penalty and a long range effort and even though a point is a strong result, some fans at the game felt the Blues deserved all three points. In raging wind and rain the game started somewhat evenly and both sides created early chances. In a frenetic opening ten minutes Eastbourne defender Carl Harris fizzed two free kicks across the Ringmer penalty area. And Jason Sowter and Titus Patterson tested the home goalkeeper with powerful crosses. But it was the home side who took the lead and somewhat undeservedly so from the penalty spot. Steve Dallaway was brought down in the Blues’ penalty area, in what looked a softer challenge than Dallaway made out and Danny Andrews made no mistake from the spot. He calmly wrong footed Trott and side footed the penalty into the bottom right hand corner of the goal – 1-0 Eastbourne.
Ringmer immediately rallied and went close through Mark Price. His “bullet like” diving header from a Jo Dryer cross was inches over the bar. Titus Paterson then did well to skin his marker and send across a sumptuous delivery. Tubon needed only the faintest of touches to grab the equaliser but failed to get on the end of the whipped ball.
Trott saved well down to his right from a Ben Sillings long range effort and Eastbourne had a glorious chance to double their advantage. A deep Joe Heffenden cross was met on the half volley by an unmarked Sillings and his effort went a long way over the bar with the goal gaping – a lucky escape for the Blues.
Then with five minutes left until half time, the deserved equaliser came. A Joe Dryer corner wasn’t dealt with efficiently by the home defence and a hopeful ball back towards the penalty box by Kieran Mercer was flicked onto Aaron Hasan. The centre half collected the ball and calmly slotted the ball past home ‘keeper Oldroyd with his left foot to equalise for Ringmer.
Half Time – Eastbourne UA 1 – 1 Ringmer
With the weather conditions deteriorating the first 15 minutes of the second period passed without incident. Scrappy play in midfield was backed up by long punts forward from both backlines as any quality began to disappear.
It wasn’t until the hour mark had been and gone that the first chance of the half was created. A good overlapping run by Blues full back Elliott Finney resulted in a sublime hanging cross that was met by the head of Mark Price. His header thudded against the crossbar and to the delight of the travelling Ringmer fans Dave Altendorf slotted home the rebound.
With the away side celebrating, Eastbourne ran straight from kick off and equalised. Striker Lee Walsh was given far too much space 30 yards from goal and he expertly guided a long range effort around Ringmer goalkeeper Gary Trott and into the far corner of the goal to level the game at two-all.
Both sides then looked like they could go on to win the game. Eastbourne substitute Lucas Mann turned his marker and smashed a strike against the post with Trott seemingly beaten, before a home side goal was chalked off for a clear offside. Trott then tipped a long range effort around the post after it skidded awkwardly off the wet surface as Ringmer looked to be on the back foot.
With the pressure being soaked up, the Blues were still looking dangerous on the break. The pace of Tubon was causing the home side’s back line plenty of problems. A long punt forward by Gary Trott sent Tubon scampering after it and when he had beaten his man he seemed to be pulled down by rash defending from Jules on the edge of the area. The referee waived away the protests for a red card and appeals for a foul and the game started to fizzle out to its climax.
Altendorf flashed wide from the corner of the area late on for Ringmer as the Blues picked up a valuable away point.
Full Time – Eastbourne UA 2 – 2 Ringmer
I think most would have been happy with a point prior to the game but something left me with the feeling that Ringmer could have perhaps deserved to snatch all three.
