HAILSHAM 1st X1 5-0 RINGMER 1st X1 S.C.F.L. Division 1 10/02/10 Reported by Ben Ashcroft A much changed Ringmer side travelled to Hailsham on the back of a superb win away at Crawley Down last time out, but unfortunately returned home empty handed. A tale of two halves saw Ringmer boss the opening proceedings but a spirited second half performance from the Yellows saw them score five unanswered goals to seal an emphatic win for the home side. Ringmer started the game brightly with Joe Dryer shooting narrowly wide after good work from Jayson Sowter. Then a deep free kick fell at the feet of Sam Sowter and his nifty touch gave David Altendorf the chance to score but he miss hit under pressure and the chance went begging. Hailsham were really struggling to get into the game during the early stages and Jayson Sowter went close with a cross from the touchline that nearly lobbed home goalkeeper Chris Winterton. Sam Sowter then controlled a cross from the left neatly before firing narrowly over. Joe Dryer skipped into the clear down the left wing and unleashed a typically venomous drive that flashed agonisingly the wrong side of the post. The pressure was still firmly on and the Sowter brothers linked up well again as Sam shot narrowly over from the edge of the area. Ryan McMillan nearly put the Blues ahead when he met a corner from Joe Dryer at the back post but his header cleared the crossbar by a matter of inches. Hailsham’s first attempt on goal came on the stroke of half time when a free kick from Stuart Lewis was punched clear by Tom Rand, the resulting rebound fell to Gary Brockwell but his drilled effort was well saved. Half Time - Hailsham 0 – 0 Ringmer Hailsham flew out of the blocks in the second half and within a minute had taken the lead. A long through ball saw Ben Putland scamper after it. He ventured into the penalty area and a late challenge saw him unfairly brought down. Referee Stuart Green gave the penalty and up stepped Gary Brockwell to slot home with ease to put the home side ahead. Jo Tubon then had the chance to equalise straight from the resulting kick off but Chris Winterton saved well down low to his left. From the resulting corner, a goalmouth scramble saw Sam Sowter, Jayson Sowter and David Altendorf all have shots blocked by a resilient Hailsham defence. The hosts then began to play some decent one touch football that started to create gaps in the Blues backline. A well worked piece of play saw Brockwell feed Stuart Lewis and he raced into a one-on-one opportunity with Rand. He steadied himself and finished clinically into the far corner to give the hosts a two goal advantage. Ringmer were seemingly struggling and conceded again when Brockwell grabbed his second with a well struck free kick that evaded the grasp of Rand. Brockwell then had the chance to grab a third when he was played clean through on goal again but this time shot the wrong side of the post. Substitutions for both sides failed to make any difference and Hailsham continued to press the Ringmer defence. A defensive mix up allowed Dave Harris a free shot at goal and he didn’t pass up the chance as he cooly converted into the far corner to put the game to bed. Joe Dryer shot wide with a quarter of an hour remaining before a good run from Hailsham substitute Lee Lock in the dying minutes saw him lob Rand, only to see a clearly offside Ryan Alexander prod home to seal the game at five goals to nil. Clearly a very disappointing trip for the Blues, but with a much changed line up and conditions not suited to football, it could have gone either way. An impressive first half performance could have seen Ringmer go in several goals to the good but it wasn’t to be and Hailsham’s clinical finishing in the second half was the difference between the teams. Up next is a tricky home tie against high flying Chichester City and hopefully a strong performance at the Caburn will see the Blues pick up a point or three. I would like to take this opportunity to also wish Jordan Lee a speedy recovery after his nasty injury at the weekend. Have a good weekend all, Ben.
