HASSOCKS 1ST X1 3 – 0 RINGMER 1ST X1 DIVISION ONE 26/09/09 Report by David Ruffles
There were no last minute heroics from the Blues this week as despite playing attractive football throughout they paid the price for their failure to take their chances in the first half as they lost in the League for the fifth time in eight outings.
In the first fifteen minutes there was little to enthuse about apart from a couple of dangerous crosses from Kieran Patel and Alex Mikolay which forced Joel Harding in the Robins goal into action while at the other end Patel headed the ball off the Ringmer goal-line following a corner. From there on Ringmer dominated play in the first half with Mark Price, Aaron Hasan, Matt Percival and Darren Lok all going close to giving the Blues a richly deserved lead. However five minutes before half-time a cross from Dan Jacques following a short corner bobbed around in a congested goalmouth before Phil Gault’s header at the far post found the net to give the home side the lead.
Having failed to take advantage in the first half the Blues came out determined to get something out of the game before two quick goals sealed their fate with half an hour left to play. First Gary Trott, who was handicapped by an injury for most of the game, failed to keep out a powerful free kick from Gault and then at a corner his punched clearance went straight to the feet of Anthony Hibbert who fired the ball back into the net. Ringmer continued to play attractive football but against a physically taller and stronger side they were had difficulties in penetrating their back line and had to resort to long-range shooting. Their best chances saw Harding at full stretch to keep out a long range free kick from Percival and a shot from Hasan which rebounded to safety off the Robins crossbar.
Thus Ringmer came away empty handed and slipped to last place in the table. This Saturday they are at home to the side immediately above them in the table, Crowborough Athletic, in the First Round Proper of the FA Vase with both sides hoping for a performance that will kick start a revival in their fortunes.
