PAGHAM 1ST X1 1 – 1 RINGMER 1ST X1 DIVISION ONE 07/11/09 Match Report by the Crouchies
Ringmer travelled west again this time to Pagham hoping to repeat last weekends 3-1 win at Arundel. Much the same team had been selected with only David Altendorf replacing an injured Alex Mikolay in midfield.
The Blues started in attack mode from the off and in the first minutes Jon Marzetti crossed from the right for the onrushing Blues but the ball was eventually cleared but it gave a message to The Lions that they meant business. Ringmer gained control and never let go, pinning the home side in their half for most of the first half with occasional break out's usually originating from goal or free kicks and were dealt with by Marzetti, MacMillan, Mercer & Hassan defending Ringmer's goal.
Although Ringmer had most of the possession they found it hard to breech Pagham's back four. A run of 3 corners from Marzetti after 20 mins failed to generate any goals, Ringmer best chance from this half came when Titus Paterson crossed from the left to find David Altendorf in the centre twenty six yards out who's shot screamed in just over the bar. Then on 29 minutes Pagham were awarded a controversial penalty after a late whistle from the Ref, Ringmer's keeper Gary Trott was adjudged to have brought down Scott Towers who was running in with the ball in the area, Lee Bradshaw stepped up and shot passed Trott to make it 1-0 completely against the run of play.
The Blues stepped up the attack with a great run from Mark Price down the wing crossing to Altendorf who put it back to Paterson who's shot went just over. On 35 minutes great play from Jayson Sowter found Darren Lok running in his shot pushed wide by Hallett in the Lions goal, Altendorf got on the end of a free kick from Kieran Mercer only to knock over the bar then on 45 mins Jo Jo Tubon made a good run towards goal down the right, fending off two defenders Tubon put in a lovely cross were a clever dummy by Price who left it for Sowter to blast in towards goal but again it was just over the bar. The half ended with supporters from both sides wondering how the home side were one up.
Second half and Ringmer went looking for the equaliser, Joe Dryer was on for the hard working Lok and had the real first chance, smashing the ball into the home side netting after five minutes. A few minutes later Ryan MacMillan was brought down in Pagham's penalty area and a spot kick was converted by Altendorf to level the score at 1-1.
The last half hour saw the game come alive as two nervous teams locked horns to get the winner. Ringmer second sub and Kieran Patel came on for Price who once again had not stopped running. Pagham had raised their game and had a few good chances shooting just over the bar, at the other end Jo Jo Tubon smashes a shot in that hits the upright, ricocheted off to hit keeper Wes Hallett, then a defender cleared off the line. Trott was called on to make a save from a Danny Cowtan shot on the return, a few minutes later another Pagham move went round a diving Trott, but the shot was cleared by MacMillan. Kieran Patel got a shot in at the other end but keeper Hallett easily saved. Paterson made way for even more fresh legs up front with Craig Brown, in an attempt to get the elusive winner. More chances at either end had both sides scrambling to clear putting supporters nerves on edge as the ding dong battle went on A last shot from Altendorf skimmed tantalizingly close across the Pagham goal mouth and then a last chance for the home side shooting in to have Trott tip the ball over before the final whistle ended the match all square at one a piece.
