PEACEHAVEN & TELS 1ST XI 4 – 1 RINGMER 1ST XI DIVISION ONE 27 October 2009 Report by David Ruffles
Ringmer were always second best in this local derby against a Peacehaven side unbeaten in its last twelve matches and brim full of confidence.
Peacehaven took an early lead in the third minute when ex-Ringmer man Clive Snell floated a free-kick into the Blues penalty area and Craig Bunch ran unnoticed behind the defensive wall to head the ball past Gary Trott from close range. Twenty minutes later Tom Burton ran onto a through ball to round the advancing Trott before placing the ball in the net. By now the pattern of the half was set with the Ringmer defence struggling with the incisive passing from the Peacehaven midfield and the direct approach of their strikers. In contrast Ringmer’s attacks were breaking down on the edge of the home penalty area.
One such move, after thirty minutes, saw Ben Swetman shown a red card for pushing Jo Jo Tubon to the ground as the Blues striker was setting himself for a shot on goal.
Despite being reduced to ten men the home side continued to control the play and five minutes before half time they went further ahead. A shot from Lee Newman from just outside the Ringmer penalty area took a slight deflection and then a bad bounce just as Trott seemed certain to gather the ball. Instead it went through his hands and legs and into the net by his left-hand post.
Ringmer started the second half in a determined mode as they sought to get back into the game with Aaron Hasan, Kieran Patel and Darren Lok going close to scoring. Then Ringmer’s best player on the night Lok shot through a crowded penalty area to pull a goal back. However, it was not all one-way traffic as Peacehaven made light of being one man short.
Bunch beat Trott to a long ball and rounded the keeper who was grateful to see Jon Marzetti rushing back to make a covering clearance. Then came a carbon copy of an early move in which a cross from the left eluded everyone in the Ringmer goalmouth only this time Hasan was unlucky to make contact with the ball and steer it into the net.
With their three goal advantage restored Peacehaven seemed content to sit back and defend for the final twenty minutes. Despite this Ringmer could well have scored two goals in this period. Firstly a powerful strike from Patel was headed off the goal-line and then keeper Jake Buss made a finger-tip save to deny Lok a late consolation goal.
