RINGMER 2 – 1 PEACEHAVEN & TELSCOMBE – AFTER EXTRA TIME BRIGHTON CHARITY CUP 2ND ROUND – 02/02/10 Reported by Ben Ashcroft Ringmer deservedly progressed into the third round of the Brighton Charity Cup after a hard fought win at home to Peacehaven & Telscombe last night. Goals from Joe Dryer and Kieran Patel sealed the result after extra time. Manager Bob Munnery brought in goalkeeper Tom Rand for the suspended Gary Trott as Ringmer looked lively in the opening period. After Tom Levitt had headed wide for the away side with only seconds gone, and Roy Pook miss-controlled when one-on-one with Rand, the Blues began to assert their authority on the game. The first chance for the Blues saw Kieran Patel shoot straight at the keeper before Jo Tubon fed Dave Altendorf, to strike narrowly wide. Pressure was constant from the home side and with the slope on their side opportunities were being created. Tubon headed narrowly wide after a looping cross evaded the Haven defence before Joe Dryer saw his thunderbolt of a shot blocked by a well timed challenge from Wes Millis. Then with twenty minutes played, Kieran Patel opened the scoring. A huge goal kick from Rand saw winger Patel start a foot race with Peacehaven goalkeeper Jake Buss to reach the ball. Patel slid in as the goalkeeper looked to have smothered the ball but his neat touch chipped the ball into the far corner of the net to give Ringmer a deserved lead. Peacehaven then began to work their way back into the game and Tom Levitt had a goal chalked off for the visitors after being adjudged offside. A swift counter attack saw Ryan Smith cross perfectly for the sliding Scott Marshall to flick the ball narrowly wide – a lucky escape for the Blues. At the other end, only a stunning one-handed save from Jake Buss stopped the hosts from doubling their lead as Patel again went close. His powerful low drive was met by a superb full stretch save went close again and at half time Ringmer were one goal to the good. With the temperature plummeting both sides found it hard going in the opening period of the second half. Play was scrappy and chances were few and far between. The impressive Patel volleyed over from a tight angle after good work from Aaron Phillips. Joe Dryer then created space for himself to unleash an audacious 25-yard volley that was well held by Buss. Dryer was then booked for a foul, as Ringmer continued to push on to double their advantage. Dave Altendorf then saw yellow for a foul on Scott Marshall and Dave Soutar was introduced into the game after replacing Louis Brown. Tom Rand then punched clear a deep cross before the resulting build up play saw him save well at the feet of Tom Levitt. From the resulting goal kick Joe Dryer raced clear to see his low drive flicked wide. Jon Marzetti was booked five minutes from time and just a minute later the away side were level. A deep cross evaded the entire Blues defence and up stepped Roy Pook to clinically slot the ball past Rand from a tight angle. The away side were in the ascendancy and Scott Marshall shot wide from distance before Ben Wheatland hit a last minute free kick towards goal – Rand did well to stop the shot and hold onto the ball as the game trickled into extra time. A short break allowed the visibly tired players to catch their breath as Aaron Last was introduced into the game. The first half saw no incident at all as both sides seemed more worried about conceding than they were about scoring. The only chance of the half fell to Tom Levitt but Rand did well to thwart the danger. With time fading a goal for either side in the second half was likely to prove the winner and so it proved. Up stepped man-of-the-match Joe Dryer to score the decisive goal. He latched onto a Dave Altendorf pass and after evading several challenges smashed the ball into the far corner of the net to put the home side ahead just three minutes from time. Peacehaven’s Roy Pook was sent off for violent conduct minutes later as the game came to an end with Ringmer progressing into the next round. A good result for the Blues against a very strong Peacehaven outfit who are currently sat third in the table. It’s certainly good to get back to winning ways and hopefully it will continue on Saturday against Crawley Down. Have a good week all, Ben.
