RINGMER 1st X1 2 – 2 REDHILL 1st X1

Division One

27/02/10

By the Crouches

With the heavy rains preceding today, not many could envisage that this match would take place, indeed with the main topic at the gate being “your joking it's not is it?” and the answer “amazingly yes” for this we must thank the rain for stopping, the sun and wind over Friday, but most of all the efforts of Dave, Bob and others who worked on the pitch, Bob still doing so as supporters were turning up for the match. The pitch was deemed playable by the officials and although the surface was far from perfect the game got under way.

The first half was a case of stalemate all round, neither side having any sort of believable scoring chance, only half chances that went wide or easily gathered by the keepers. Ringmer's first real chance came after 15 minutes after McMillan chested down and crossed to Sam Sowter in front of goal to shoot wide, then 5 minutes later Macca sends another cross over from the right to Sowter this time his shot was saved by Redhill Keeper Chris May who managed to get a hand to it. Redhill didn't make too much of an early impression on the Blues goal with only a few minor efforts, one a cross from Daniel Morris was met by Tyrone Sealey, who headed just over the Ringmer cross bar. The Blues defence where dealing well with any potential efforts, keeper Tom Rand having little to do in the way of saves.

On the half hour Ringmer's play takes a leading role, Joe Dryer working hard down the left, but all to often crosses and through balls finding a box that was void of Blue. When there was though Ringmer were close to scoring. David Altendorf with a good chance but shooting wide, Dryer, Price and Sowter shooting around the outside of the net, Kieran Mercer shot in after the ball rebounded out to him from the goal after another Dryer shot.

Redhill come back with a good move up the field which broke through the Blues defence getting a shot at goal but Rand saved, Rand's kick down field was gathered and passed to Altendorf who's miss kick failed to claim an easy opening goal. A few minutes later, Mercer on the edge of the box pushed the ball out to Mark Price who shot just wide. On the return Redhill come close as Mercer was then on hand to make a goal line clearance. MacMillan was on for a goal with only the keeper to beat but a good stop by May at Maccas feet thwarted his effort. Shortly after this Price smashed in a shot from the right which unluckily took a deflection and went out for a corner. Redhill then blast one at the Ringmer goal but high over the bar. Sowter had the last shot of the half for the Blues but straight into May's arms. 0-0 at half time

The second half started well for Ringmer MacMillan working up the right and passing to Sowter running in through the middle but he and a defender reach the ball at the same time and the ball is shunted out to Price but his shot is saved by the Reds keeper May. Dryer working up the left crossed to Sowter who in turn passed to Price but his shot was easily caught by May once again. Price was again unlucky in the 62nd minute when his shot from a free kick hit the side netting

Sam Sowter was replaced by new signing Michael MacDonald, to give fresh legs up front in search of a goal for the Blues.

Redhill come close on the 65th minute and manage to get a dangerous cross over to the centre which Rand made safe. Then on return, Jon Hogg tackled and brought down Price in the penalty area who was on for goal, Blues supporters were incensed after the ref carried on play seemingly not noticing anything happened, after the match he said “I thought the ball had been played”.

Things started to hot up in the last quarter as both sides fought to claim the probable one goal that would decide the match and the game swung either way, Kieran Patel brought on for the hard working Dryer and Alex Mikolay for Philips.

Redhill gave Ringmer supporters a scare after a long clearance found their forward down field open, but a returning Defence forced his shot wide. Then another Redhill strike had Rand collecting a shot in his arms, a few minutes later Rand was forced to make a good save.

With time running out the talk was of a “0-0 draw”, “one of them games” and so on, fortunately the Blues couldn't hear this chit chat and scored in the 83rd minute. Patel's fresh legs running the ball up the left flank comes across and passes neatly to Price then on to Altendorff who planted the ball into the back of the net. Sheer elation for anything at the ground Blue but only for 42 seconds though! Redhill score straight away from the kick off with a long ball down the right wing catching the Blues defence on the hop, a well struck cross by sub Chris Hubbard to the centre, found Reds midfielder Tyrone Sealey unmarked in front of goal to knock in for the equalizer. 1-1 elation for the Reds, but for the Blues supporters a feeling of sheer disbelief.

An exciting and somewhat nail biting last 5 minutes ensued, both sides not wanting to loose one point but wanting three. Tensions grew as Ringmer Dave Soutar miss kicks in defence and Redhill pick up the ball to shoot over. Back up the other end and a Blues attack ended after Reds Josh Bonnet fouled in the penalty area in the last seconds of the full time, Ringmer were awarded a penalty, this Altendorff dispatched successfully and the Blues went 2-1 up.

With full time up the game was now in to stoppage time with Ringmer only having to hold on for a few minutes to get a much needed three points. Redhill slung everything into levelling again and went on the attack. In the fifth minute of this added period a copy book goal by the visitors of their first claimed this prize,

this time the cross was supplied by Daniel Morris with equal precision for Sealey to knock in once again. Ringmer's only mistake all match was not learning from their first.
