SOUTHWICK FC 3 – 3 RINGMER FC - FT Ringmer win 3 - 4 a.e.t. Brighton Charity Cup R1 19/01/10 Report The Crouchies
With the first match to be played in over a month everybody was excited at the prospect of actually getting to see or play a game of football tonight. The honours fell to Southwick to entertain Ringmer for the first match of 2010 Season and that being the first round of the Brighton Charity Cup.
Ringmer's line up were missing Ryan Macmillan and Joe Dryer but included a re-signed Glen Matten who many will remember from a few seasons ago, Glen returns from playing for Whitehawk.
The match started pretty evenly with both sides finding their football legs once again. It was Southwick however who were the first to find the net after only fifteen minutes when Neil Harris headed in from a free kick. Ringmer played an 4-4-2 for the start of the game but they seemed uneasy with this different than usual system. As the game settled down the Blues pushed on the attack, chances coming from Kieran Patel, Jo Jo Tubon & Darren Lock going wide or over. Matten tried his hand with a 25 yd free kick but went just wide on the half hour. Southwick were matching the chances at the other end but they to could not find the net. The half ended 1- 0 to the home side.
The second half got under way with Ringmer reverting to a 4-5-1 play to try and get on top of this match which had up until now been very labour intensive but without result. A change had to be made with Alex Mikolay replacing Titus Paterson, who had been on the receiving end of some heavy knocks in the first half.
It was noticeable that Ringmer were having more of the ball now, putting pressure on time and time again. Southwick always looked dangerous though on the break causing the Blues defence to work hard, Patel shot just wide after 6 mins for the Blues and at the other end Gary Trott in the Blues goal, turned a Wickers free kick around the post after 15 mins of play. Elliott Finney replaced Matten who had worked hard in his return match.
Ringmer got a break in the 64th min after Mark Price nearly lost his shirt and was brought down in the Wickers penalty area, David Altendorf converted to put the match on an even keel again at 1-1. This did not last long however, a direct ball up to Southwick's forwards where Wickers Captain David McNeil hit a powerful shot in from the left which deflected in off the post giving Trott no chance of stopping it, 2-1 again to Southwick.
Another Sub change for Ringmer as Sam Sowter comes on for Darren Lok.
Ringmer were again chasing and were now working the ball well, a Ringmer cross from the right found Patel out on the left who beat the defence and crossed in, Price rose to the occasion and headed in past keeper Gareth Cook, evens again at 2-2 on 73 mins, then 8 mins later Ringmer won a corner from the left, the ball swung in to the Wickers area and was banded about finally being hoofed out up-field, straight to Alex Mikolay who lofted in a 30 yd ball, much to every bodies (except Alex's I'm told) astonishment the ball found the top right hand corner of the net (superb goal) 2-3 to Ringmer.
For the first time the Blues had their nose in front and only had to see the last eight minutes out to win and avoid extra time but you might have known, Southwick came back again in a feverish attack and scored again with a goal from Lee Thompson, bringing the match level again at 3-3 and sending it into extra time.
Neither of the two sides needed such a work out after the long lay off from football, nor did the shivering supporters watching but there it was 3-3 and extra time..
At the start of extra time Ringmer made a move straight away down the right but lost the ball after it went out of play, the home side won the throw in but somehow the ball was knocked to Patels feet 26 yds out in front of goal, he rounded two defenders and shot in to the right side of goal but the diving Cook could only get a finger to it and it hit the net for Ringmer's fourth after 4 minutes.
A few minutes later the Ref blew as Tubon was felled just inside the box, everyone thought it was a certain penalty, the Ref however had a word with his linesman and no penalty was given! Although Southwick tried they couldn't pull it back and eventually I think they ran out of steam even with Shep's help towards the end! Ringmer's had a tad more in the tank which told in the final fifteen and they held out to win 3-4 after extra time.
