Match Team and Report

WHITEHAWK 1st X1 0 – 0 RINGMER 1st X1

- S.C.F.L Division 1

08/03/2010

Reported by Ben Ashcroft

After Saturday’s impressive win over rivals Mile Oak, Ringmer had the tough task of facing in-form FA Vase semi-finalists Whitehawk on Monday evening. Some resolute defending and impressive goalkeeping by Tom Rand, kept the game scoreless throughout and the Blues travelled home the happier with a much needed point in the bag.

In cold and blustery conditions, more suitable for Polar Bears than footballers, both sides failed to gain any control of the early proceedings. The swirling wind contributed to a scrappy opening and resulted in chances being few and far between.

Ex-hawks player Glen Matten made a superb challenge on Wes Tate to stop a dangerous looking attack before a long ball forward from the Hawks backline gave Darren Budd the opportunity to take a first time shot, but it was well saved by Tom Rand.

Although the early chances were mainly for the home side, the Blues were looking controlled at the back and after Aaron Hasan had cleared off the line, Ryan Macmillan shot narrowly over from a Joe Dryer corner.

Macmillan then went clean through on goal but a decisive challenge from Jay Head blocked the danger. Journeyman Wesley Tate then found space in the penalty area for the hosts but he uncharacteristically shot wide.

Dave Altendorf then shot over from a corner as Ringmer started to battle back into the game and were showing that they were to be no pushovers.

Half-Time Whitehawk 0 – 0 Ringmer

The game got going in the second half and within minutes of the restart, Tom Rand had to be on hand to clear at the feet of Hawks winger Sam Fisk, before Fisk again created an opportunity by playing in Jay Head, but Rand was on hand to kick out of play.

A long range freekick tested Rand again but he collected the ball with ease when it looked destined to find the net.

But the game was by no means one-sided, Ringmer did create opportunities of their own and Mark Price showed some neat touches before shooting straight at the Whitehawk goalie, whilst Joe Dryer and Sam Sowter looked dangerous down the flanks.

Ryan Macmillan made a nuisance of himself in the penalty area and flicked just wide after good work from Sam Sowter.

At the other end Scott Kirkwood headed over with the goal gaping and Darragh Ryan had a cross that flashed through the penalty area and inches wide of the far post.

The dying minutes saw the Hawks opt for a more adventurous formation and they nearly won the game when Stewart Holmes brought the best out of Rand on his goal line as the on-form stopper tipped over.

An eternity of injury time passed before the referee brought the game to a close and although a few bookings marred a battling encounter, Ringmer went home with their heads held high. Another invaluable point in the quest for Division 1 status and another clean sheet will no doubt boost confidence ahead of this weekend’s tie with St. Francis Rangers.

Man-of-the-match without doubt – Tom Rand! Have a good week all and enjoy the sunshine! Ben
