Report by the Crouchies

At last we got to play this game and at home, the sun was out and the Ref was happy to play. Ringmer's manager Bob Munnery was forced to make some last minute changes to the line up after hearing that Alex Mikolay was unavoidably detained somewhere unable to get to the ground and we still had Ryan Mac out, Mark Price still off injured, and Matten, Bowra unavailable. Back though was Dave Soutar after a season and a half away playing for some other lot! Aaron Last was on the bench and is almost back after an age with an injury, also Jon Marzetti made an appearance for us.

Ringmer started well and scored after only 7 minutes courtesy of a Dave Altendorff head, banged in from a corner taken by Jo Jo Tubon, a minute later Darren Lok had a shot saved by the Wick keeper Alex Bryant. Wick's first attack attempt on the Ringmer goal finished with a shot going wide. Then the first of many a contentious decisions from the referee when he gave Blues Kieran Patel a card, Patel was attacking goal, Bryant rushed out to meet him, Patel jumped to avoid an inevitable collision but they clashed and a foul and card given against Patel?

On 22 minutes the Blues had their only bit of good luck all match after they were awarded a penalty this was duly converted courtesy of a D.A. foot, then four minutes later Joe Dryer saw his 26 yd shot go just wide of the Wick goal. On the half hour the Ringmer supporters thought that another penalty would be given after Blues forward Darren Lok was brought down in the visitors penalty area when on on for a goal but strangely the ref ignored the incident and played on? Wick pulled one back after 35 minutes with a surprise goal from Simon Clayton who shot through an unusually static defence. The half ended with Ringmer looking the better of the two sides and going in one up at 2-1.

The second half didn't start to well for the Blues though after Wick scored an early second goal after only 3 minutes of play after an initial Blues attack, the ball being cleared up field, where Scott Murfin beat the Blues defence to score, this equalled the match at 2-2.

However Joe Dryer then put Ringmer ahead on the hour, once more taking it to 3-2 with a wicked shot in from the left beating Wick keeper Bryant. Then ten minutes later a brilliant effort and cross by Aaron Philips out on the left found Dave Soutar in front of goal to head in to make it 4-2 to Ringmer. The Blues looked hungry for another, Patel, Lok and Sam Sowter working well together, Sowter inches from heading in after one such inter play. A few minutes later Sowter (S) again broke through the Wicks defence but his shot was deflected into the side netting. Aaron Last just on for Lok made a neat pass back to Altendorff on the edge of the box but his shot went over the bar. Wick were still trying but some of the Wick supporters were saying that they would need a miracle at this point to pull anything back!

With only five minutes to go this miracle happened, the gods turned on Ringmer and made Gary Trott rush out to an onrushing Wick attacker to clear the ball, unfortunately he came out of the area and was adjudged to have hand balled the ball and was forthwith extracted from the pitch, Dave Soutar was taken from the defence and put between the posts.

The last five minutes were filled with free kicks for Wick all in the Blues half as Ringmer attempted to adjust to the situation of only nine on the outfield. Wick pounced on the ball and pressured the Blues instantly, the ref giving free kicks to them it seemed at every small opportunity. Wick then pulled two back in quick succession a loose ball bouncing around the Blues area was shot in by Scott Murfin 4-3. A second goal then followed from Wick a few minutes later when George Gaskin got on the end of another loose ball after a Wick free kick shot in to put the score level at 4-4 the Wick get out of jail free card sending the game into extra time.

Almost immediately at the start of extra time the ref awarded a penalty to Wick, a run to the edge of the box ended as two players collided one doing his job defending and the other doing his job attacking, inevitably they both ended up on the ground, penalty given!?! Scott Murfin despatched beyond the reach of Soutar and it went to 4-5 in favour of Wick.

Ringmer's nine fought on with a frustrated Soutar looking on from the goal mouth but with tiring legs having to do more work the Blues supporters had a sense of De Ja Voux. After 22 minutes of play Wick struck again after Gaskin jinked his way through a tiring Blues defence to put the ball in the net for number six, three minutes later Scott Murfin made it seven for the visitors but many thought the ball had been either punched out by Soutar or it had hit the bar as the ball rebounded back into play but the linesman declared that it had crossed the line?. Incredibly the Blues fought on forever working hard to pull things back. Sam Sowter coming close from a throw in but keeper Bryant saved with his feet, the ball then came out to Altendorff who blazed it over the bar. Then in the dying seconds Sowter (S) got a well deserved goal after he made a great run through defenders and beat the keeper to make the final score 5-7 to Wick.

One can't help thinking that we have more against us than those awful gods up there. Ringmer to my mind (and others) felt that the Blues had played well and thoroughly deserved the win and probably if we had a different official on the day we would have. Not that the Ref have a bad game but he seemed to make a lot of bad mistakes which had a pivotal role in turned the game, everybody makes mistakes but these mistakes were commented on by both teams supporters.

Nothing against the Wick lads and their supporters they are a great bunch and we wish them well in the next round.
