Report by Steve Frost

Before the start of this game, some of the lads fell in to the old trap of speculating about results. The gossip was that if they beat Bexhill and with games in hand on the teams above they could be towards the top of the table. This introduces an incorrect mindset that all they have to do is turn up, well for much of this game this is all Ringmer did as they played one of their most disappointing games of the season, conceding soft goals and possession all over the park. Bexhill worked hard but should not have been a threat except as half the Ringmer side looked like they had spent the previous night on the tiles the overall performance was a disappointment to watch.

With the exception of the six yard boxes, the Bexhill pitch was in very good shape, the weather was great for football, some sun and no wind. Bexhill had the kick off towards the west. For the first quarter Ringmer played the better however they looked like a cat toying with a mouse, lots of moves and possession but not creating opportunities, this probably stemmed from the prematch conversations which led to overconfidence. On 21mins, the first goal came courtesy of the Bexhill keeper when attempting to punch clear an innocuous Ben Courtnage corner only for the ball to strike the rear of his hand and into his own net (0-1).

The lead was short lived, four minutes to be precise, when Ringmer conceded a free kick on their left mid way into their half. The ensuing delivery was not particularly threatening but it exposed the frailties of today’s defence when an unchallenged Bexhill header found the Ringmer net (1-1).

Ringmer’s game continued to deteriorate with the management and bench becoming ever more frustrated with the unnecessary series of mistakes. Half time came without change in score and an opportunity to shake it up in the dressing room.

Mark Streeter came off at half time with an injured ankle; he was replaced by Graham Bannantyne who went into goal releasing Matt to left back. Ringmer started well and now looked more businesslike with crisper shorter passing and more penetrating forays into Bexhill territory.

10 minutes after the restart Ringmer conceded another free kick mid way into their half but this time out on their right. The result was a carbon copy of the previous Bexhill free kick; failure to defend the incoming ball resulted in Bexhill poaching another goal against the run of play (2-1). By now Ringmer seemed to have walking wounded all over the park, the first to leave was Ryan who was replaced by Amro Shaker for his first outing after his welcome return to the Ringmer squad. The captains armband passed to Lewis Clarkson.

This second Bexhill goal was the precursor to Ringmer entering a nightmare period of play when on 66 minutes Ringmer conceded another goal to give Bexhill a two goal lead (3-1). To make matters worse, 3 minutes later, Ringmer conceded a penalty which Bexhill duly dispatched (4-1). This score line at last seemed to be the trigger for Ringmer to get to grips with the game and start to play as they can. The defence tightened up, midfield upped the work rate and some decent balls got up front.

On 75 minutes, Louis Brown left the park with an injured ankle he had been carrying since midway through the first half. He was replaced by Ricky Betsworth who went to left midfield whilst Justin moved into centre back.

4 minutes after the substitution Louis Munnery released an early ball for Rob Frost to beat the Bexhill defence whose keeper slipped slightly which allowed Rob to finish clinically with his left (4-2). This restored a little pride and became the impetus for Ringmer to push ever more in search of more goals. This pressure was rewarded 2 minutes later by another Rob goal who lobbed the Bexhill keeper (4-3). Now the Ringmer charge was well and truly in full flow with further surges however the clock was to beat them in their last gasp mission. Final score 4-3 to Bexhill and hopefully some lessons learned by Ringmer. Ringmer lost this game today when it was there to be won. Regroup next week, refreshed after an early night with the determination to win the remaining games of the season.
