Match Team and Report
Ringmer 2nd XI – 4 v 1 – Hailsham 2nd XI SCFL Reserve Section Challenge Cup Round 2 23/01/10 Report by Steve Frost
The reserves last game was 3 weekends ago and without regular training and a hastily assembled team the expectation of a win against the visitors from the SCFL Reserve Section Premier was not at the forefront of everyone’s mind. The match started 12 minutes after the allotted 15:00 with the referee caught up in the delays caused by the road works on the Lewes Bypass eastbound lane at Southerham.
It was a trifle damp under foot as Hailsham had the ko up the hill, Ringmer started as they continued for most of the first half with most possession inside the Hailsham half. The first attempt on the Hailsham goal came 3 mins after ko when a Ringmer free kick from the right corner of the 18 yard box found Ben Courtnage whose shot flew a couple of inches (approx 50mm for the younger readers) over the cross bar.
For the most of the next half hour, Ringmer continued to range numerous assaults on the Hailsham defence, via the wings and route one however they could not unlock the packed Hailsham defence. Hailsham broke free on a number of occasions, causing a few heart in the mouth moments for the few home supporters, drawing on the experience of Ringmer Veteran’s keeper Graham Bannatyne to prevent Hailsham taking the lead. Then on 31 minutes, Ringmer were awarded a free kick near the right corner of the opposition 18 yard box, the delivery was met near the far post by the head of Aaron Philips to open the scoring for Ringmer (1-0). The remainder of the first half played out without either side testing the opponent’s keepers with sorties from Dave Altendorff, Rob Frost, Ben Courtnage and Jordan Lee. The Ringmer defence played its part in keeping the first half scoreline at 1-0 in favour of Ringmer with some brave work by Jesse Stonell, sweeping up by Dave Souter and disruption of the Hailsham midfield by Louis Clarkson.
At the restart, Ben Courtnage was replaced by Lance Avery in a direct swap. For the first 20 minutes of the second half the expected onslaught by Hailsham duly materialised with Ringmer clinging on at times with various brave and last gasp moves by Louis Brown and Louis Munnery. An exception was a rapid counter attack started by Louis Brown who found Jordan Lee who in turn supplied Rob Frost who chipped the keeper and just wide unfortunately.
Ringmer eventually weathered the storm and started to break out more frequently with progressively more possession in the Hailsham half. On 63 minutes, Ringmer were awarded a penalty that was put away by Dave Altendorff (2-0). Five minutes later Rob broke down the left and cut back in across the box to supply a tap in for Jordan (3-0). Jordan left the field on the half hour with Mark Streeter taking up the role of left midfield.
Hailsham again entered a period of pressure which was eventually rewarded when on 83 minutes they penetrated the Ringmer goal (3-1). Then on 86 minutes Rob was supplied by Louis Brown who in turn picked out Dave Altendorff to stroke into the Hailsham net (4-1). Job done, more fixture problems.
This was a keenly fought game from both sides however it was particularly heartening to see some of the old sparkle back in the Ringmer side which has been decimated by departures and last minute changes.
