RINGMER 2ND XI – 2 v 5 – HAYWARDS HEATH 2ND XI

SCFL RESERVE SECTION EAST

07/11/09

Report Steve Frost

What a difference a week makes, Ringmer cannot this week feel aggrieved by the result as they contributed to this defeat. A ten minute period part way through the second half killed this game as Ringmer conceded 3 goals in quick succession. In parts, more energy was expended arguing with each other so that the game plan evaporated into the warm autumn sun bathing the Caburn.

Haywards Heath kicked off up the slope with Ringmer quickly applying pressure so that for the first period the supporters believed that they were to witness a replay of last week’s performance. This was illustrated after 25 mins when Ringmer worked the ball down the left to the edge of the Heath 18 yd box where it was cut back for Ryan Moore to strike sweetly into the Heath net (1-0).

Even though Ringmer had most of the play there was unease as Heath occasionally broke free and left the home supporters holding their breath. Suffice to say, on 30 mins a firmly driven Heath cross from the left touch line was hammered into the Ringmer net for an own goal (1-1).

The remainder of the first half played out with both Heath and Ringmer having goals disallowed for offside. Neil Grant tried to unlock the Heath defence with several marauding mazy runs deep into the Heath 18 yd box, unfortunately they were stifled and smothered by layers of heath resistance. Meanwhile Steve Hickman-Smith and Jesse Stonnell kept lines clear with some powerful clearances from the centre of defence. The first half finished honours even, Ringmer did not look as settled as last week, the team effort was not universal with the first signs of unrest showing.

Ringmer kicked off the second half with Ringmer looking as if they meant business; their efforts soon bore fruit when they won a free kick 2 mins after the restart mid way into the Heath half on the right. The ball was delivered towards the right of the Heath 6 yd box where it was dragged down by Rob Frost who spun and turned the ball into the Heath net (2-1). At this point the score was just and the home supporters believed that the team would go from strength to strength.

On 53 mins, Ringmer pressed the self destruct button when they conceded three goals in quick succession; the first resulted in a Heath tap in (2-2), the second on 55 mins was conceded at the far post after a corner (2-3) and the third on 63 mins when a freak long shot from the left soared into the Ringmer net (2-4). In the middle of this, Craig Olive was replaced by Chris Sheehan in a straight swap.

After some stability appeared to be restored, Ringmer substituted Matt Little for Moore to bring fresh legs into midfield in an attempt to recover the situation. The tactic seemed to be working with Ringmer probing the Heath defence. The final role of the Ringmer dice was to bring on Ashley Lloyd for John Kilgarriff who had been in the thick of it throughout. More Ringmer waves penetrated the Heath area however their defence hung on and fended off all that Ringmer could muster. Right at the end of the game, tired Ringmer legs allowed Heath to break clear and beat the stranded keeper (2-5).

The final score does not reflect the game however the result probably does because Ringmer threw this game away through a loss of concentration for ten minutes in the second half.
