Match Team and Report

Ringmer 2nd XI – 4 v 0 – Loxwood 2nd XI

Reserve Section Challenge Cup

31.10.2009

Match Report by Steve Frost

At last, the Reserves got exactly what they deserved, a comfortable and well crafted win in the Reserve Section Challenge Cup.

Pre match banter noted that Loxwood were clear top of the SCFL Reserve Section West and were unbeaten. Loxwood to the Reserve Section West are what Peacehaven are to the East, therefore this was going to be a difficult encounter.

Some pre-match coaching by Lee and Paul reminded individuals of their roles and responsibilities. It worked because the whole team played their part in this confident and well organised display of football.

Young Philip McDonald from the youth squad had his first outing in the Reserves; he rose to the challenge as if he had played there all season, finishing the game with a clean sheet.

From the Ringmer spectator perspective, this was a thoroughly enjoyable afternoon at the Caburn with Ringmer putting on a display that meant that Loxwood never had a chance. At the end of the game some Loxwood supporters were overheard questioning if the Ringmer front side had a match that afternoon, perhaps they didn’t, surely that must be the reason that the Ringmer Reserves had played so well. Sorry Loxwood, this was an all Reserve squad you met today, good luck in the league.

Loxwood kicked off the first half up the slope, from that point on the ball spent most off the first half in the Loxwood half with Ringmer sending a variety of approaches at the Loxwood defence, it was like a military campaign where the attacking army probes looking for weak spots in the opposition defence.

A typical example of the Ringmer team ethic was illustrated after 13 mins when they lost the ball out on their right in the Loxwood half, they immediately recovered the ball against the odds and the resulting cross into the Loxwood penalty area found Chris Sheeham who stroked the ball into the net to the right of the keeper (1-0).

Ringmer continued to probe and penetrate without success until 34 mins when good work down the left resulted in a firmly struck cross to the near post which found the shin of Rob Frost and a second Ringmer goal (2-0).

The remainder of the first half was played with Loxwood rarely troubling the Ringmer backs who stuck to their tasks providing cover for each other.

At the start of the second half the home support wondered if Loxwood were going to come out fighting, determined to upset the Ringmer rhythm under the lights. Ringmer with the ko up the slope did not allow Loxwood any opportunities except the occasional corner, the Ringmer defence playing as a disciplined unit, instead Ringmer continued to create opportunities for midfield and forwards alike.

On 64 mins, a Ringmer foray found Frost on the edge of the Loxwood 18 yd box, his sudden burst of speed penetrated the Loxwood defence for him to place the ball to the left of the keeper (3-0).

Ringmer made their first substitution after 68 mins when the battling Sheeham was rested allowing the fresh legs of Matt Little to reinforce the midfield and help secure the win.

Ringmer did not rest on their laurels; instead their confidence grew as they continued to create opportunities throughout the team. An early example was when Ringmer had a goal disallowed for an unlucky offside on 71 mins.

On 80 mins, Jesse Stonell was brought off to ensure he lived to play another day, on a number of occasions he looked as if he would be broken in two. This was a double substitution with Chris Cook leaving the field having worked hard in midfield. Lewis Clarkson and Ashley Lloyd seamlessly joined the action to support the marauding Ringmer.

The final flourish was on 85 mins when Frost out ran the Loxwood defence to complete his hat trick by sliding the ball diagonally across and in the Loxwood goal.

A first rate team effort by all, well done, well deserved.
