Match Team and Report

Newhaven 2nd XI – 2 v 1 – Ringmer 2nd XI

SCFL Reserve Section East

06/03/10

Report by Steve Frost

As ever at Newhaven, it was cold with a wind from the north and the stand casting a dark shadow over the dugouts in the afternoon sun. After the mid week draw (2-2) at Sidley on Wednesday night the reserves could have done with a win. Suffice to say that although they had most of the play they failed to capitalise on their possession and squandered a basket full of opportunities in front of goal.

Newhaven started the match towards the sea with Ringmer facing the wind. Ringmer had the majority of the initial possession with a couple of chances to test the Newhaven back line when on 12 minutes Ringmer lost the ball just inside their half, Newhaven punted an innocuous ball towards the Ringmer goal which was picked up by the wind and drifted over the Ringmer keeper into the net. Newhaven’s delight and surprise was in total contrast to the disbelief of the Ringmer squad (1-0).

The remainder of the first half followed a similar pattern with Ringmer having most of the possession but failing to create many clinical opportunities on the Newhaven goal with the few created squandered. The majority of the side seem to have lost the ability to provide good early ball for colleagues to punish opposing teams. Players generally seem to linger too long on the ball wanting to take people on so that space and channels evaporate whereas as an early ball would open up the opposition.

Ringmer started the second half however they were not quite as settled as they had finished the first, so much so that after only 5 minutes Ringmer failed to clear a not particularly threatening Newhaven attack so that the opposition were gifted an opportunity to score which they duly took (2-0).

On 60 minutes, Ringmer made their first substitution with Richard Betsworth making a direct swap with Darren Lok who had been struggling part way through the first half. The substitution showed immediate benefit with the fresh legs contributing to Ringmer applying even more pressure on Newhaven, with unfortunately, further squandered chances.

With 15 minutes left, Gary Cornwall came on for Mark Streeter into midfield. Ringmer continued to apply pressure with Newhaven rarely causing problems.

3 minutes later Louis Munnery supplied a good early ball down the left channel for Rob to pick up and drive forwards to slot the ball past the floundering Newhaven keeper (2-1). The remainder of the game played out with Ringmer continuing to batter the Newhaven goal to the frustration of the bench as the ball would not go in the Newhaven net.
