Match Team and Report

Ringmer 2nd XI – 2 v 3 – Peacehaven 2nd XI

SCFL Reserve Section East

06/02/10

Report by Steve Frost

Patch and make good Ringmer gave the division leaders Peacehaven a huge fright at the Caburn today. The undefeated runaway leaders swaggered on to the pitch with every expectation of swatting Ringmer aside, however, the Ringmer irregulars almost blotted their copy book with what was a hard fought team effort. Ringmer took the lead twice in this game and almost made it to the final whistle except for two inexplicable soft goals right at the death.

One of the Ref’s better decisions was to start the game early as both teams were ready; Ringmer had the kick off down the slope. The blues started well, pinning the opposition into their half when after 9 minutes, Ringmer were awarded a free kick just inside their half on the left. The ball was drilled towards the Peacehaven 18yd box, landing some 8 yards inside where it continued forwards to be met by Louis Munnery’s outstretched leg to poke the ball onwards and into the opposition net (1-0). This goal reflected the balance of play at the time, Peacehaven did not seem to be the same side that had beaten Ringmer earlier in the year, this gave Ringmer some belief that perhaps they could give them a game, the belief spread through the team and energised all players into a determined unit marshalled by Ryan Mac from the back. This game also had the very welcome return of Kiefer who was paired alongside Mac forming a solid and experienced defensive duet.

Although Peacehaven occasionally put together some penetrating football they did not look like scoring until on 21mins Ringmer failed to clear the ball from the wing which allowed Peacehaven to pick their spot and level the score (1-1).

Almost immediately after the restart Ringmer conceded a corner on the left, the resulting shot required a full stretch finger tip save from Gary Trott diving to his left, peace and stability returned. On 25 minutes, Jordan Lee received a dead leg from a tackle which required him to leave the field to be substituted by Woody in a straight swap.

The remainder of the first half was played with both sides controlling the game for periods with neither seriously threatening the others net. The half time whistle came with the score at 1-1. Ringmer were probably content that they had risen to the challenge. The pitch was starting to show the signs of the battle and in parts looked similar to last week’s which had had such an impact on the game.

After the restart, Peacehaven came out determined to rectify the scoreline in their favour which put the Ringmer defence under the cosh. The initial pressure increased the temperature such that five minutes after the restart, Ryan Mac picked up a yellow after a disagreement with the referee.

The initial Peacehaven onslaught duly subsided and Ringmer started to relieve the pressure by increasing forays into the Peacehaven defence. One such move was a rapid break out by Woody on the left who supplied Jesse on his left side which as we all know means he has to turn 350degrees to shoot with his right towards the left near post. The shot was met by an excellent save from the Peacehaven keeper diving to his right to parry the shot, the rebound fell to the feet of Ryan Betsworth whose goal bound shot was somehow kept out by a further reaction save by the keeper.

For the next 10 minutes the Peacehaven team gradually became more fractious with each other as they made no impact on the Ringmer defence.

On 70 minutes Ryan Betsworth came off and was replaced by Rob Frost in a direct swap. Before the Ref’s ink had dried, Ringmer had taken the restart throw in deep on the right, Ben Courtnage provided a tempting cross which was met by Rob towards the near post whose header hit the crossbar, the rebound was then met by Rob to stab into the Peacehaven net (2-1).

The game continued with Peacehaven applying frustrated pressure on the resilient Ringmer defence. The home support began to think that perhaps Ringmer would be the first team this season to inflict defeat on the visitors when on 88mins a week scuff shot squeaked in by the post (2-2). The supporters recalibrated and thought Ok, we’ll settle for the first draw against Peacehaven this season. The Referee adjudged that the game required 5 minutes of added time. In the fiftth minute an innocent weak bobbling ball from the Peacehaven left, failed to find its intended forward target however it did find the Ringmer net (2-3).

Football can be a cruel game at times, today Peacehaven took the win, Ringmer must take the momentum and build on this team performance.
