Match Team and Report

Phoenix United FC XI – 3 v 1 – Ringmer 2nd XI

Mid Sussex Senior Charity Cup

17/10/09

Report by Steve Frost

The venue for this match was at the Glaxo SmithKline Sports Park. The pitch is inside the secure site which meant that to enter you had to pass through security. This was not expected by some of the visitors who lapped the ground several times looking for a point of entry. Paul’s phone rang a number of times as lost souls sought guidance to the mysterious point of entry.

Ringmer’s young squad lined up against Phoenix with hope of getting to the next round of this Cup. For most of the game if possession and control counts for anything then they should have progressed. However, as we all know, skill and possession doesn’t always count even though Ringmer went one up after just 2 minutes. The goal was created when Chris Cook made a penetrating run in from the right up to the edge of the 18 yd area where he released the ball to his left for Matt Little to stroke into the Phoenix net (0-1).

Phoenix levelled the score five minutes later from a corner on their left. The incoming ball flew like a Cruise Missile as it glided over the heads of the packed defence. All they could do is watch and wait for the engine to stop and the ball to descend, unfortunately this was in the far corner of the Ringmer goal (1-1).

This first half continued with Ringmer penetrating the Phoenix defence with wave after wave of attack however neither forwards, midfielders and backs could create a shot that tested the Phoenix keeper.

On 39 minutes Phoenix had a shot that Dan was required to tip over his crossbar with his finger tips. Ringmer were awarded a goal kick.

The first half finished with honours even with Ringmer again contemplating if the lack of goals would be their undoing.

The second half was a rerun of the first with Ringmer again making attack after attack pinning Phoenix in their half. Six minutes after the restart, Chris Sheeham was called into action in a direct swap with Tom Swancott who had to leave the field with a hamstring injury.

On 70 minutes Dan was again called on to palm the ball over the Ringmer crossbar. This is totally against the run of play.

Paul played his final card and brought on Ryan Betsworth for Rob Frost in a straight swap on 80 minutes. Before Ryan had chance to get into the game Phoenix have stuck the ball in the Ringmer net (2-1).

Right at the death with Ringmer taking chances to even the score, Phoenix grab another making the final score (3-1). Well done Phoenix, go on and win the cup so Ringmer at least have the consolation of knowing they were beaten by the champions.
