Match Team and Report

Seaford 2nd XI – 1 v 2 – Ringmer 2nd XI

SCFL Reserve Section East

02/01/10

Report by Steve Frost

The Crouch at Seaford is fortunate that if the sun shines then the pitch receives sufficient rays to melt the overnight ground frost, this was the case today when many SCFL games were postponed due to the weather, this included both of these teams front sides. The word was that many of the senior Ringmer players selected to play pulled out as the ko neared, the exception was Kieran, their places were filled by four youth squad players who stepped forward and all gave a good account of themselves.

Ringmer had the kick off towards the clubhouse and into the rapidly setting sun, they commenced briskly and had the best of the first fifteen minutes. Ringmer’s efforts were rewarded when Ryan Betsworth received the ball on the left inside the goal area where he turned and moved towards the goal only to be brought down by a clumsy Seaford tackle. Ryan got to his feet to take the penalty which he confidently and firmly stuck into the Seaford net (0-1). Mid way through the first half, the ever committed Jesse Stonell picked up a head injury near his right temple which required treatment, after the application of vinegar and brown paper he bravely returned to the centre of defence. The remainder of the first half was peppered with opportunities falling to Kieran Patel, Ben Courtnage, Jordan Lee and Ryan, some of them startling as to why they did not end up in the Seaford net. The first half finished with the single goal separating the sides with Ringmer wondering if they were to rue the missed opportunities.

The second half started with Rob Frost on for Ryan Betsworth in a direct swap. The Ringmer midfield and defence did not start as brightly as they had finished the first half, the lack of concentration allowed Seaford, four minutes after the restart, to weave though both and complete the move with a well struck goal to level the scores (1-1).

This Seaford goal had hit Ringmer like a bucket of cold water to the face, they responded immediately four minutes later when Jordan Lee finished off some good team football with a left foot strike from just inside the goal area which restored the Ringmer lead (1-2).

The detail of the second half is that Ringmer had umpteen chances to increase the lead with multiple opportunities being created by Rob Frost and Ben Courtnage for Kieran Patel, Jordon Lee and Louis Munnery. When chances fell to Rob he must have had his boots on the wrong feet as shots went to the left, right & over the goal, those on target were blocked or clasped by the Seaford keeper. Seaford were not without chances as Phil McDonald pulled off two fine saves to preserve the score line in favour of Ringmer. Towards the end, both teams looked tired on what was now a sticky pitch.

For a change this season, the balance of opportunities was reflected in the result as both teams gave a good account of themselves in the deteriorating conditions.

A good and fresh start to 2010, well done to all and congratulations to new manager David Millar in his baptism in Senior football from Junior, missing out youth.
