RINGMER FC 1 – 2 WESTFIELD FC SUSSEX SENIOR CUP R1 08/09/09 Report by David Ruffles
With Sean McFadden side lined for six weeks with a cracked rib Ringmer welcomed back Gary Trott in goal for this Sussex Senior Cup match.
Division 2 side Westfield set out their stool from the outset with nine men plus the goalkeeper behind the ball and a lone striker up front as Ringmer dominated play in the first half. However all too often the Blues tried to run through the massed ranks of defenders rather than let the ball do the work. Nevertheless when they played down the flanks and crossed the ball Mark Price and Joe Dryer both came close to scoring before Dan Foster, in the visitors’ goal, did well to tip over a header from Jo Jo Tubon which seemed destined for the top corner of the net. All this pressure finally produced its reward when a free kick from Dryer found Ollie Rowe cutting in behind the defence to give the Blues the lead with a glancing header.
Ringmer suffered an early setback in the second half when a cross from Duncan Jones was headed home by Warren Parsons who unmarked at the far post. From then on the momentum was with Westfield and their long-ball game plan as Trott was called into action to deny Lawrence Brand and Martin Brain. It was not quite one-way traffic though as Tubon had two strikes blocked before his third attempt inside a minute went over the bar. Then with extra-time beckoning Foster just managed to tip a free-kick from Matt Percival over the bar.
With Mark Price going off with a knee injury and all three permitted substitutes used Ringmer had to play all of extra-time with just ten men and eventually the one man advantage told. With Ringmer’s defence stretched wide Sean Smith was given time and space in which to head the ball over the advancing Trott for the winning goal in the closing stages.
