Match Team and Report
Match details for Ringmer U18 against Worthing Untd in the SCFL Cup 1st round

Ringmer U18 1 - 9 Worthing Utd

SCFY Cup 1st round

24/01/10

Report by Brian Henderson

At long last after a long break because of the weather we finally played a match against a Worthing team who are top of the U18 West League. Despite the break the team were still suffering from injuries causing some changes to the lineup but the team, on paper, was still a strong one.

The match started at 11 o, clock under increasingly sunny skies and it was Worthing who settled the quicker of the teams. Phil in goal was called into action several times in the first 15 minutes to make important saves to keep the score level. Then on 15 minutes Ringmer attacked in force resulting in a great through ball to Jordan but he did not shoot early and the chance went begging. However on 16 minutes Worthing scored their first goal when a shot was deflected high over Phil’s head. Their second goal was scored on 20 minutes and at this stage Worthing were in control.

Our cause was not helped when Jake Allen had to be substituted because on an ankle injury on 23 minutes, he being replaced by Joe Seymour in a straight positional swap.

The next 10 minutes showed a distinct improvement by Ringmer because the ball was being played shorter and players were working and moving for each other. The reward was a goal on 30 minutes as a result of good approach play by Lewis Finney whose cross was met by Jordan Lee to score. 2-1 Game now on we thought but Worthing upped their game and only good work by Phil in goal stopped another goal and another better save a few minutes later resulted in the ball falling kindly for the Worthing forward to score their 3rd. Phil produced another great save just before half time to keep us in the game at 3-1 down.

Kevin’s half time talk was to close the opposition down much quicker as we had allowed them far too much space and time on the ball and to use the flanks more. The plan was to score an early goal and to pressure their defence especially as we were now kicking down the slope.

Another forced change was an injured Ben Thompsett being substituted by Taylor Briggs. As Taylor had been our linesman I had to take on his job for the second half so I am afraid that the full details of times of goals are not recorded. All I can say is that Worthing totally controlled the second half and scored another 6 goals to make the final score a very humiliating 9-1 loss. There were too many players who appeared to accept that the game was lost early in the half although there were 4 or 5 players who battled for the whole match.

The referee controlled the match well and played advantage when possible so no complaints there.

The league starts again next Sunday but we will have to improve drastically if we are to start winning games again.
