RINGMER 1st X1 0 – 3 ARUNDEL 1st X1 DIVISION ONE

Ringmer started this game and for anybody watching the first few minutes would have thought that the Blues were favourites to get a win. The first few seconds saw the Blues run through the Arundel midfield with ease to pepper in at least four shots in quick succession, all being blocked by a sturdy defence. The counter attack however up the right flank earned the Mullets a throw in adjacent to Ringmer’s 18yd line, the throw found an unmarked Scott Tipper who had all the time in the world to head in passed Trott in the Blues goal.

From the re-start Ringmer had a few more chances with Dryer shooting into the visitors keeper Rhys Griffiths hands, then Sowter making a good run through the midfield and passing to Whiteman who shot just wide. Brown and Dryer both went up in the Arundel area but just couldn’t make contact with a Matten free kick but it fell to Whiteman who again was off target shooting over the bar. Back at the other end Arundel come close as Trott spilled a ball which Arundel won but the cross was cleared from an empty goal. On return Griffiths had to make a good punch away from another Whiteman shot on 16 mins. There then followed 30 mins of rather unspectacular football with most of the action dwelling in the middle third until just before the whistle Patel volleyed a shot that skimmed the visitors post.

Arundel start the new half with a shot over the Ringmer bar, on return Matten found Brown with a throw in and in turn Brown passed to Cook who had Griffiths save. A few minutes later Browns shot went high and wide. Then Philips had a speculative shot from the halfway line go over the bar. Then on 17 minutes Griffiths made a good diving save after some good play from Brinkhurst Brown and Philips gave Matten a shooting chance. But then within 3 minutes the wind was taken out of the Blues sails after Arundel score two. The first a well taken free kick by Barry McCoy went through a gap in the wall and into the top corner of the Blues net. This was then followed by a penalty awarded to the Mullets two minutes later for a tackle in the box which was put away by Tipper. Ringmer struggled from there on in with best efforts from Brown all missing the target.

All in all Ringmer didn’t get the best out of the wings all game, with the heavy midfield play keeping that side of the business out of the picture and the defence under considerable pressure, feeding the lone wolf up front was a hard game, thus it was not one of Ringmer’s best games this season.
